Weight Watcher

Weight Watcher, James Georgopoulos

“Weight Watcher“ This piece repurposes a vintage 1940s refrigerator by integrating a surveillance camera, projecting a live feed onto an embedded screen within the appliance. The vintage 1940’s refrigerator, retrofitted with a closed circuit video system (from an ex-goverment building), coldly deposits the viewer onto a screen within the appliance. Inspired by today’s advanced refrigerators, now manufactured with basic artificial intelligence. The front mounted camera is made to make the viewer feel as if they’re being watched, their choices evaluated, as AI will further advance to learn about your habits and assist you. "Weight Watcher" critiques the pervasive nature of "smart" technology and its implications for personal privacy, illustrating how everyday objects are becoming tools for constant monitoring and data collection. Video Sculpture aluminum, metal, glass, copper, plastic, concrete, enamel, closed circuit live video feed 90 × 29 1/2 × 22 1/2 in (228.6 × 74.9 × 57.2 cm

“Weight Watcher” was part of the 2016 solo show “The Earth is Flat” at MAMA Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. The work is part of the permanent collection on view at the Summit Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio.
